Changes to our appointment system

We are changing our appointment system from Tuesday, 29th August 2017.
We have listened to the feedback from our patients on the monthly Friends and Family Survey about the difficulty you have in making an appointment. The result is a completely new rota which almost doubles the face to face and telephone appointments available each week.

There will be a significant increase in same-day face to face and telephone appointments directly bookable through reception. Every day, at different times of the day there will be some appointments released for same day booking as well as 48 hour and 72 hours in advance. You can also book an appointment up to 4 weeks ahead.

There are also evening appointments on Monday and Tuesday every week until 7.30 pm.
We also have nurses trained to deal with minor illness and minor injuries and they can prescribe medication if required. We also have pharmacist appointments and nurse led clinics for patients with long term conditions. NHS Health Checks are available with the HCA’s too.
When calling, please provide our reception team with some details about the reason for your call so we can make an appointment for you with the most appropriate clinician.

All patients have been allocated a Usual GP and we would encourage you to see the same GP regularly to help build up some continuity of care and help you get to know your GP.
We hope you will now find it much easier to make an appointment at Northville Family Practice. If you make an appointment and then do not need it however, please let us know so we can offer it to someone else.

We encourage and welcome feedback, good and bad, on how you are finding the new appointment system. If you would like to provide this please complete a feedback form available in reception or on the website. If you have a particular challenge or concern about making an appointment please ask to speak with the practice manager, Karen Biddel so we can reflect on this and act as soon as possible.

Patient Open Meetings

With BrisDoc now running Northville and with new GPs and a new practice manager, two Open meetings were recently held at the Filton Town Council offices for patients to hear more about these changes. It was an opportunity to meet some of the new faces and understand what will be different and what will stay the same. BrisDoc’s representatives were really encouraged to have so many patients attend as it gave an indication at how concerned and interested people were to hear what was happening in the area.

BrisDoc Managing Director, Nigel Gazzard gave the audience an outline of BrisDoc’s services to date.  BrisDoc are best known as an Out of Hours provider.  Since 2001 when they began providing services to the residents in the South of Bristol, they have now grown to provide Out of Hours care to the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset through their network of employed and locum GPs.  They also run Broadmead Medical Centre based in Boots in Broadmead as well as GP-run assessment services at the BRI and North Bristol Trust. Their clinical workforce includes a network of over 200 GPs.

NHS England has awarded BrisDoc the contract to run Northville for two years but they want  to be involved more than just the length of the contract.  With the surgery closing in Filton Road a few years ago and new houses being built at Harry Stoke, Cheswick and on the airfield there is a real need for high quality primary care services in the Filton and Northville area.

The new practice manager, Karen Biddel outlined that the priority for the practice was to recruit a permanent new team of GPs.  There had been a one-month window from being awarded the contract to actually starting and as highlighted on the news, it is difficult to recruit GPs currently.  However they had been pleased to recruit a small team already – this was a great start.  Dr. Khaled Shuhaiber will work every Tuesday and Wednesday, Dr. Kathy Ryan will also work on a Wednesday and Dr. Oliver Marshall will work on a Monday.  The practice is hoping Dr. Hannah Rumble will return after her period of maternity leave and Dr. Heta Montonen has agreed to work on a Monday for a while. To ensure there are enough appointments so patients can be seen quickly, other surgeries will be taken by locum GPs until a permanent clinical team is appointed although the plan is to try and use the same locums rather than a different face every day.  Feedback from patients was they appreciated the continuity.  Many in the audience was pleased that there were male GPs at the practice too.

Many things will remain the same however. The nursing team of Frances, Janet and Anne are still there as well as Margo and Tracey the HCA’s. All the reception team are the same so there will be some familiar faces.  Referrals to hospitals will continue as will services provided by district nurses and health visitors.  Patients with a long term disease will continue to be seen.  Services including vaccinations, health checks, support to stop smoking and travel vaccinations will continue to be provided.

There are already plans for new services including the facility to send prescriptions electronically to the pharmacy of a patient’s choice and a minor injury service in April to relieve the pressure on minor injury units in the area.  It is also hoped a minor injury will be more responsive when based in practices with a fast track service to Cossham Hospital for x-rays if needed.

The practice is very keen to start a patient participation group to seek patient feedback on its services and to hear suggestions for improvements.  If this is something you would be interested in, please send your name and contact details (these will not be shared without your permission) to or phone the surgery on 0117 969 2164.
